Multi-Modal Suburban Rail Transport System(MMTS) Phase-2: Work To Begin In August 2013

10 Years of long waiting is coming to an end. The most awaiting Project MMTS Phase -2 work is likely to be started by end of August 2013. 6 tenders have been submitted for the prestigious project. L&T and GMR are the popular among the bidders who filed the tenders for the Second phase.

Initially GMR has opposed the inclusion of the line between Umdanagar and Shamshabad Airport which comes around 6.5 KMs. Hence this route has been removed from MMTS Second Phase works.

Total estimated cost of MMTS Second Phase is around Rs. 641 crores and the phase-II will be conducted in two phases. First phase is costing around Rs. 360 crores. State Government has to bear 66% (2/3) of the total cost while the remaining will be borne by the railways. The proposed project is to be completed in 3 years.

The First Phase of this work has been divided in to 3 parts. Including quadrupling of track for the sections between Ghatkesar-Moula Ali and patch doubling between Moula Ali-Seethaphalmandi (Part-I). Doubling between Sanathnagar-Moula Ali, restoration of track between Telapur-Ramachandrapuram (Part-II) and doubling between Medchal-Bolarum and Falaknuma-Umdanagar (Part-III).

Even though the tenders are being finalized for MMTS Phase-II, GHMC is in dilemma to release the funds for Rs.641 crore project. RVNL has sought for 60 crores as the state government share for this current financial year, but GHMC has only released Rs.10 Crores as of now. These funds will no longer sufficient as the Railways trying to finish of at least Rs. 100 crore work in this current year 2013.

Railway officials are reported unhappy with the way funds are being released from GHMC, on other side union railway ministry has released Rs.30 crores already for the proposed project. We hope that these fund issues get resolved soon and the most awaiting project should start.

MMTS PHASE 2:

This proposal has come in May 2010 and been approved by the committee in March 2012.This project was planned at an estimation of 632 crores and the committee estimated to complete MMTS Phase 2 project in five years (2012-17). Out of this estimated amount State Government will bear two-thirds of funds and the rest by Indian Railways.

This is a joint venture of Indian Railways and State Government.

The government had announced that it would allocate Rs 25 crore during the financial year 2012-13 out of which the first installment of 6.25 crores has been sanctioned .The central government, through the railway budget, has recently sanctioned Rs 99 crore for the project.

The work has been planned to be done in two stages.

STAGE 1:

MMTS Line Distance Cost Changes
Falaknuma-Umadanagar-Airport 20 km 85 crores New line from Umdanagar to airport and doubling of line from Falaknuma-Umdanagar with electrification
Tellapur-Patancheru 9 km 32 crores Track restoration and electrification
Secunderabad-Bolarum 14 km 30 crores Electrification and remodelling of stations
Sanatnagar-Moula Ali 21 km 170 crores Doubling and electrification

Previously till 1995 this Telapur-Patancheru line was used for suburban services. Now it has become unused so changes has to be done near RC Puram to link Patancheru to the main line.

STAGE 2:

MMTS Line Distance Cost Changes
Moula Ali-Malkajgiri-Sitaphalmandi 10 km 25 crores Doubling and electrification
Bolarum-Medchal 14 km 74 crores Doubling and electrification
Moula Ali-Ghatkesar 14 km 120 crores Quadrupling and electrification

“Phase-I has been facing problems with sharing tracks as there are no separate tracks for MMTS. For phase-II, however, new tracks have to be laid and existing tracks changed to electrical lines”, says a Railway official.

Phase-II will integrate with the upcoming Metro at nine junctions. On Metro route-I, it will integrate at Malakpet, Lakdikapul, Khairatabad and Bharat Nagar; on corridor-II at Falaknuma; and on corridor-III at Secunderabad, Begumpet and Nampally.
