Soon rotaries, central medians (traffic islands) and interchanges on traffic islands of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) will look more aesthetic as the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), a wing of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), proposes to take up a beautification programme.

Initially, the HGCL has planned beatification at the following locations: Entrance of central median at Gachibowli; rotaries at Nanakramguda, Kokapet on Gandipet road and APPA junction on Vikarabad state highway; single trumpet junction near Narsingi, rotaries/loops at the cloverleaf interchange at Shamshabad, Bongulur junction and interchange, rotaries at Dundigal junction/interchange; and Shameerpet junction/interchange.

HMDA officials told Express that they propose to have artifacts, sculptures, hard and soft landscaping, water bodies, and fountains at the traffic islands.

Expression of Interest is invited from from firms for beautification concepts, and execution and maintenance for three years, they said.

The firms should engage artists of repute for furnishing beautification concepts with sculpture design. Minimum five designs should be submitted.

The sculpture, besides being aesthetically appealing, should also be informative and educating. Themes on culture/heritage of Hyderabad, features of ORR and its surroundings or modern arts etc are welcome. The sculpture work should be executed in steel, rock, cement, sand or any non-hazardous material with all weather resistance coating for exterior application, officials said.

The proposed sculpture themes should be presented along with descriptive notes, drawings, photographs etc.

The proposals will be screened, short listed and approved by a committee comprising experts in the relevant field and officials of HMDA/HGCL.

The committee will finalise the beautification concept/design to be executed in the designated traffic islands, they added.

The selected firm will bear all expenditure of work execution and maintain the traffic island for the stipulated period at their own cost. In turn, the HMDA will permit the firm to display advertisement boards there during the period.
