International Institute of Information Technology @ Gachibowli, Hyderabad

The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is an autonomous university founded in 1998. It was set up as a not-for-profit public private partnership (N-PPP) and is the first IIIT to be set up (under this model) in India. The Government of Andhra Pradesh lent support to the institute by grant of land and buildings. A Governing Council consisting of eminent people from academia, industry and government presides over the governance of the institution.

IIIT-H was set up as a research university focused on the core areas of Information Technology, such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, and their applications in other domains. The institute evolved strong research programmes in a host of areas, with computation or IT providing the connecting thread, and with an emphasis on the development of technology and applications, which can be transferred for use to industry and society.

IIIT-H is a university that provides the quintessential college life. The college's curriculum is a perfect blend of core courses and non-technical courses, designed to give a platform to build our lives on in the future.

IIIT-H emphasizes heavily on research areas to help in building the depth of knowledge and foundations for the students' careers and most importantly, help solve real-life problems in the society. The college has efficiently organized research centres and labs to facilitate inter-disciplinary research and an enviable network for exchange of knowledge and ideas.

Here, the curriculum gives flexibility to the student for selecting courses and projects of their interest. The Institute's unique human values program at the undergraduate level has already gained attention at the national and international levels. The perfect blend of core courses, science courses, engineering, maths and humanities courses is a highly balanced program that only a few colleges can boast of. The Institute offers students a unique environment that promotes culture, sports, societal contributions, art, self-governance and human values.

Campus:
The 66 acres campus, located on the main Gachibowli road (also called the Old Bombay highway) is well connected by bus and is on the route for the proposed metro rail. We are surrounded by many academic and research institutions like the Hyderabad Central University, Indian School of Business (ISB), TCS-CMC, Indian Immunologicals and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Development Banking (JNIDB), and are minutes away from the bustling HiTech City Center and Lingampally, which are major shopping areas. Lingampally is also the nearest railway station. Within-campus facilities include a bank extension counter, ATM machine, stationary shop, and laundry services.

Presently the academic, administration & research labs are in four large 3-floor buildings and construction will be completed soon of a new 5-storey academic block, which will house more classrooms, labs, student workplaces and a bigger library.

Now let's talk about the various aspects of studying at IIIT-Hyderabad.

Academics:
So one of the things for which you'd have chosen IIIT Hyderabad is definitely going to be the standards of academics here. But a few things you must know are that while the college does provides you with excellent academic environment, it also expects a fairly responsible behaviour from the side of the students. At IIIT H, the academic model allows for greater freedom and flexibility, but with great powers come great responsibilities. If you are given an opportunity to choose electives right from your 5th semester, and by and large your own course of education from there on, you should be responsible to do so in an appropriate way. But do not fear, there are a lot of experiences and opportunities at IIIT H, that'll help you become a responsible student too. All that it would require is to open yourself out of your preconceived notions and try to see the world from the eyes of innovation and research. But that also means having a third eye open to look at the larger picture, something the great diversity of humanities courses offered here, from polity to economics, and classical texts to modern philosophy, are going to help you in.

Food:
We have a wide variety of choice with 4 messes running inside the campus. Each mess serves its own type of food, with OBH-FF serving South Indian food, OBH-GF serving North Indian food, Yuktahar serving Healthy oil-free food and NBH serving a mix of both Indian cuisines. The Canteen serves as the Non Veg mess three times a week(Lunch + Dinner). Laden with a couple more cafeteria serving snacks, it puts to rest the fears of so many students of the "Messy Mess Meals" stereotype people have of engineering colleges. A couple more general stores complement all the necessary places for a smooth sailing at the college.

Every place has a lifeline – something that it thrives on, without which its existence would be diminished. For IIIT-H, it would without a doubt be the juice corner cum canteen. Need to brainstorm over a new idea? Chat up with a friend and hangout? Chill out after a deadline? Somebody's birthday treat? Or just plain dehydrated, the juice wala bhaiya's ever smiling face will remember the exact combination of fruits and sugars you want in your glass.

Not only is the city famous for its 'Hyderabadi Biryani' and 'Hyderabadi Haleem', but the availability of almost all international and national cuisines makes it worth the wait to try them out, provided you have the time for it. More relevant to the students is the availability of multiple eateries at a walkable distance from the college which includes Dominoes, Subway, Cafe Coffee Day, Pizza Corner and a whole lot of hotels in a 2-3 km radius. Then there are 'bonda' stalls a short walk away near the DLF building. The college allows you to have your food delivered, so you can enjoy your biryani or pizza in the college campus itself.

Hostels:
We have a total of 4 hostels namely, Palash Nivas (Old Boys Hostel) & Kadambh Nivas (New Boys Hostel) for the boys, Parijat Nivas(GH) for the girls. Recently another hostel called Bakul was inaugrated, it has been partitioned into Parul Niwas for the newcoming 1st years girls and 2nd years girls as well, the rest of it is a boys hostel for mostly post graduate students. The Hostel facilities are quite good with spacious rooms and housekeeping crew available everyday. The Hostels also have their own laundry service with a small but highly important general store situated in them. Another advantage is the presence of the various messes in the various hostel buildings, facilitating easy access. The Hostels also have multiple TV rooms to cheer India during the matches and for the usage of students at any time of the day. The biggest advantage of hostel residency here is the permission for students to go out of the college anytime, provided they have their ID cards at all times (Pretty useful for a quick bite during the Exams!!). Small eateries are present late at night on the road adjoining the College premises and are visited by students at their will and need.

The Workspace and the Library:
The Workspace is where you will be spending a lot of your time – it is where you will find the computer systems with internet connections for your own particular use. Only UG1 (i.e first year) students use the workspace, so you can discuss and work together here.

The Library in IIIT is right below the Workspace and houses an extensive collection of reference books on various subjects. The college also subscribes to a lot of academic material and magazines, some of which are online and can also be accessed by you. There are literary works also available in different languages. If you enjoy reading books, you will not be disappointed.
